The use of effective dose should be discontinued because it is based on the assumptions of a linear non-threshold (LNT) dose-response model and the equivalence of acute and chronic exposures at low dose or low dose rates. Both of these assumptions are false. Effective dose leads to inaccurate conclusions about radiation risk and promotes irrational fear of ionizing radiation.
